Thinning Hair? Styling & Care Tips for Men

by Vintage Grooming™ November 22, 2017

Thinning hair; an issue often sidestepped by men that can easily become demoralizing. Noticing your hairline receding is like seeing an old friend wither away. This issue can have the potential to affect everything from your confidence to your desire to socialize (at least when it firsts starts), and people without this issue have a hard time understanding its mental effect.

Luckily, There are plenty of solutions available to help you keep looking and feeling great! While there are more expensive methods on the market like hair-plugs and surgery, there are still some options to gain some confidence and potentially rejuvenate hair growth without breaking the bank.

Cut it Close & Barber Up

While growing out your hair to cover balding may sound solid in theory, it’s actually much easier to spot thinning hair when it's longer. Rather than trying to cover things up, cut it closer! Shorter hair is going to look much more natural the closer to the skin it gets, and it will be far more difficult to tell where the bald spots are.

If you frequently attend discount "quick-cut" locations, it's time to stop. More qualified and established Master Barbers are very good at dealing with this sort of issue, and can often point you toward the haircut you need to look your best. A well-trained barber will know exactly what draws attention to balding and what takes away from it, and will apply this knowledge to your haircut.

Shower Treatments

Thickening up your hair begins in the shower and what products you're using in show. Run of the mill soaps and shampoos are generally going to contain chemical additives that will negatively impact the health of your follicles, so it’s very beneficial to pick up something specifically designed for balding. If you're on a tighter budget, go with a volumizing anti-dandruff shampoo.

While this may sound odd, the reason to go with this shampoo is that it helps clear out the hair follicles on your head. Sometimes these hair follicles will clog and become impacted with sebum (from the oil glands). Heavy sebum production impacts the growing cycle and thickness of your hair. If you have a bit more in the budget, consider Noxin products, which specialize in clearing your hair follicles and delivering nutrients to your scalp. It's about $25+ a bottle, but many men swear by it. You could also try washing, scrubbing, and damaging your hair with chemical based products and lean more towards a natural and conditioning all-in-one soap that helps rejuvenate the natural oils in your hair.

Post Shower

If you’re worried about your hair completely falling out, it may be time to invest in Rogaine. Rogaine contains minoxidil, which is what is used to spur hair growth. While minoxidil is known to help maintain hair growth, you will need to use it for the rest of your life once you start. If you don’t, whatever you gain will be lost when you stop. You'll also want to avoid using thick gel or styling products. Instead, look for a "fiber building" styling product. This actually contains small fibers to help thicken your hair. If you are noticing thin spots in your hair, pick up a building fiber powder (Toppik is a top brand, but plenty of other companies make the product). These fibers are sprinkled into your scalp, as if you're peppering up your head. However, the fibers cling to your hair and instantly give you a thicker looking head of hair. It also helps cover up the appearance of skin underneath your hair.

Other natural remedies...
Dealing with hair loss can be quite challenging and some gentlemen do not want to use, or are unsuccessful using, chemical based solutions. There are many great plant based oils and other remedies available that you may want to try to help strengthen the hair you have left as well and promote healthier growth through the follicles.

We do always suggest though doing proper research, or consult with a health professional, before using any chemical based or other all-natural remedies. If you have any questions or suggestions regarding Mens Grooming then feel free to comment below or email us anytime!
